How to Calculate Roofing Materials

Accurate material estimates prevent costly shortages or leftover product. This calculator converts a simple building footprint into true roof surface area using pitch and roof type.

Understanding Roof Squares

Roofing is sold by the square — 100 square feet of coverage. A 20-square roof needs enough material to cover 2,000 sq ft of surface (plus waste).

Why Pitch Matters

A steeper roof has more surface area than a flat measurement suggests. A 6/12 pitch multiplies the footprint by about 1.16, while a 12/12 pitch multiplies it by about 1.41.

Gable vs Hip Roofs

  • Gable — two sloping sides, simplest and least waste
  • Hip — slopes on all four sides, needs extra material for hips and ridges (~10% more)
  • Complex — multiple sections, valleys, dormers — add extra waste

Tips for Ordering Roofing Materials

  • Use 10% waste for simple gable roofs; 15% for hips or complex designs.
  • Order all shingles from the same lot to avoid color variation.
  • Check underlayment type — synthetic underlayment is more durable than felt in many climates.
  • Include ridge and hip cap — these are often sold separately.
  • Verify local codes — some areas require specific underlayment or ice-and-water shield.

Frequently Asked Questions

One square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Measure the building footprint, multiply by the pitch factor and roof type factor, then divide by 100. Add 10% waste for most jobs. This calculator does it automatically.
Most asphalt shingles (3-tab and architectural) require 3 bundles per square. Some premium or thicker shingles may need 4 bundles — always check the package label.
Pitch is the rise over 12 inches of run (e.g. 4/12). Steeper roofs have more surface area, so you need more materials. The pitch factor multiplies the flat footprint area to get the true roof surface.
10% is standard for simple gable roofs. Use 15% for hip roofs or complex designs with many valleys and penetrations. Some contractors order 15–20% to be safe.
Hip roofs have slopes on all four sides and require extra material for the hips and ridges — typically about 10% more than a simple gable roof of the same footprint.
Underlayment is usually sold in rolls covering about 4 squares each. Ridge cap is sold by the bundle and typically covers 20–25 linear feet. This calculator estimates both from your roof dimensions.
The area and square calculations work for any roof covering. Metal panels are sold differently (by panel length and coverage width), so use the square footage result and convert according to the manufacturer’s coverage charts.
